Fall is finally here! It is still 90 degrees, but there is a cool-down coming, along with some exciting events at Shady Grove! Before we look at what's coming, let's look at where we have been.
Last month, our youth came together for a bonfire where they hung out, played tag, ate, and gathered around the fire to roast marshmallows.
On September 13 and 14, our church hosted a community wide rummage sale with items donated by church members. Nearly $6,000 was raised from this event to go towards children and youth projects. We would like to thank everyone who came out to help, with a special shout-out to Charlotte Griggs who organized the event. Thank you, church, for your help in making the rummage sale a success!
Family Magic Night
On September 28, local magician Jason Mardis put on a magic show for families in our church and community. He did a wonderful job using illustrations and object lessons to present the gospel. Thank you, Jason, and all who helped pull off this fun event!
Children's Christmas Play
On December 18, the church will come together for a Christmas Carol Sing-A-Long. In between songs, our children will be portraying scenes from Jesus' birth narrative. We will be practicing these scenes on Wednesday nights during the fall, so if your child would like to be a part, make sure they attend Wednesday night activities from 5:45-7:30.
Ashley Wren is looking for volunteers to help within the Children's Ministry on Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights. If you are interested in being a part of teaching kids about Jesus or have any questions, please contact her at firstname.lastname@example.org or call the church office.
Sign Language Performance
The kids participating in Wednesday night programming will be performing the sign language they have learned to the worship song "What a Beautiful Name" on October 27th during both services. Check with Mrs. Ashley for more details.
Mrs. Ashley and Co. would like to wish a very happy birthday to Izzy Covington, Lexi Wells, Emerald Resurreccion, and Mia and Carson Cabatuando in the month of October!
During the month of September, our youth helped with the annual SGUMC rummage sale. They helped sort, price, and sell items as well as load them for our customers. Our youth continues to work hand in hand with our church to help continue ministry at Shady Grove.
October Mission Projects
On Sunday, October 27 Ignite Youth will help support Fall-A-Palooza from 3pm-5pm. Our youth will be leading games. If you are able to help, make sure you sign up with Eddie Thomas.
October Sunday Mornings
During the next several months our youth will be diving deep into the book of Matthew. Sunday mornings are really exciting in our small groups as we are averaging between 20-25 youth and are becoming comfortable sharing with one another. We would love for you to join our Small Groups on Sunday mornings at 10am.
October Wednesday Nights
During the month of October we will be doing things a little differently. We hope to see everyone on Wednesdays at 5:45pm. If you curious as to what we are doing, come and see…
Youth Council Meeting
Join us Thursday, October 3rd at 6:30pm to learn what’s happening with youth. Volunteers are requested to be there and any youth who would like to participate are encouraged to attend.
This month we would like to recognize Craig Knierim, leader of our high school boys. He has been with Ignite Youth for 2 years. Craig is an integral part of the success in our youth program at SGUMC. He connects with our guys on a personal level that allows them to have fun while seeking to strengthen their faith. We would like to thank Mr. Craig for all he does for the Ignite Youth program.
This month we would like to recognize two young ladies, Olivia Steinberg and Gracie Williamson. These two have joined the tween choir and are using their gifts and talents to share with our church. On September 29, they performed a song in both of our worship services. We can’t wait to see what they will do next.
notes from the music department
Our new Tween Choir, consisting of Olivia Steinberg and Gracie Williamson, sang this past Sunday in both services and garnered two standing ovations! The girls did such a great job leading in worship and singing for the Lord. You will hear then again soon and, of course, at Christmas.
King's Kidz Children's Choir
Our children’s choir will be singing on October 20. They will sing “Another Sunday School Spectacular,” which is ten minutes long! Come and sing along to all your favorite VBS songs from when you were a kid. They will even sing The Ten Commandments, and you’ll be able to sing and follow along with the vibrant DVD track.
Our wonderful Chancel Choir is still hard at work on two Christmas musicals. The first, “Sing Christmas” by Mary McDonald and Joel Raney, is the one that will be sung at Carnegie Hall in November. We will perform this musical in a concert here at Shady Grove on December 15th at 4:00. The second, “Love Made a Way” by Mary McDonald and Jay Rouse, will be sung by the Dandridge Community Choir at First Baptist Church on December 8th. This performance will include a full orchestra in which our very own Todd DeMaria will be playing trumpet.
new member spotlight
During the month of September, we had five people join our church family: John and LIsa Breen, Tom and Tammy Clyde, and Linda Ogle. If you see them, make sure to welcome them to the Shady Grove family!
Wednesday Night Activities October 9
There will be no children, youth, or adult Bible study on Wednesday, October 9 as schools are out for fall break!
Our annual pumpkin patch church outing is just around the corner! Come join the fun as we pick pumpkins, play games, eat, and fellowship with one another at Ballinger Farm, 2805 Renfro Rd, Jefferson City. We ask our families to bring a two liter drink and chips or cookies. Cost is $3.00, which can be given to Ashley Wren or Eddie Thomas. Please sign up in advance so we can prepare accordingly.
Our annual charge conference will be held Sunday, October 13th at 5:00 at First United Methodist in Dandridge. All are invited to attend.
Join us for our annual Fall-A-Palooza on October 27 for games, bouncy houses, food, trunk-or-treat, and more! This free event is open to the entire community.
Church members: Beginning next Sunday, we will begin collecting candy and bottled water to hand out at Fall-A-Palooza. We are asking specifically for candy that will not melt. There will be a station in the narthex where candy and water may be placed.
