Summer is almost here and we are getting ready for some fun in the sun here at Shady Grove! We have a lot coming up, but first let's look at what happened in May for a few updates.
Access Life Spring Fling
Saturday, May 11, SGUMC hosted its fifth Spring Fling event. The theme for this year’s event was “Celebrating Birthdays” complete with balloons, birthday cake, and ice cream.
This event was done in conjunction with Access-Life and is a recreational opportunity for those with special challenges to experience fun activities designed with them in mind. We provide a safe and loving environment for individuals and their families to relax and have fun together.
After playing a variety of games (bowling, Connect4, BINGO, and custom-made games), the participants enjoyed crafts including decorating mini-tote bags, making a take-home flower pot arrangement, and making a caterpillar on a leaf. Easel painting was a big hit. The Sunshine Ambassadors entertained with their routines and we all enjoyed group singing.
Twenty-three participants, twenty-four family members, and twenty-eight volunteers made this our best Spring Fling yet!
The Mission Team extends a special “Thank You” to all who volunteered from SGUMC and the wider community.
Carnegie Hall Auction
On May 17, the chancel choir put on a dinner and auction to raise money to send them to sing at Carnegie Hall in November. Over 100 people were in attendance, and a jaw-dropping $15,000 was raised! Linda and the choir would like to say thank you to everyone who helped and bought- they couldn't have done it without you!
On May 19th the youth brought on the rain at our special youth-led services. We are privileged to have such a strong youth presence in our church as well as a dedicated youth leader.
End of the Year Pool Party
We celebrated our last Wednesday night of the school year with a pool party at the Yarnell's house on May 22. We had a great time swimming and socializing. Thank you to the Yarnells for being such amazing hosts, and to the Adult Bible Study for providing the food for us all!
The Cottons hosted the annual church picnic by the lake this past Sunday, and we all enjoyed the sunshine and high water! It was a great time of fellowship and, as Cotton would say, "letting our hair down." Thank you to the Cottons as well as to all who brought and cooked the food!
5th Grade Bible Study
This summer, Ashley Wren is hosting a Bible study for the graduating fifth graders to help better prepare them for middle school. They will be meeting five times over the summer- June 5, June 19, July 3, July 17, and July 31- from 6-7. The first meeting will be at Helen McClaren's house. Contact Ashley Wren for more details.
Children's Ministry Summer Events
The kids at Shady Grove will be busy this summer! Check out the events listed in the upcoming events section to stay updated with events such as Picnic in the Park, VBS, Wesley Woods, and Back to School Bash.
It's time to sign your kids up for camp! Each year the church takes a group of kids, upcoming 2nd-6th grade, to Camp Wesley Woods. Our kids will be going July 7-12. If your child is interested, you can sign up on the Wesley Woods website. Contact Ashley Wren for the scholarship code or for more information.
VBS Volunteers and Training
We can't do it without you! Ashley Wren is still in need of volunteers to help in VBS. If you would like to volunteer, contact her by email at firstname.lastname@example.org. A volunteer meeting is scheduled for this Sunday, June 2, at 12:30. A Safe Sanctuary training will follow for those who have not been trained this year. Please let Ashley know if you are unable to make it.
Middle School Small Group Volunteers
A new 6th-7th grade small group will be created in the fall for both Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings. Eddie Thomas is looking for volunteers to teach and assist in this small group on both days. This is a great opportunity to invest in the lives of the young people in our church. If you are interested in helping with this small group, please contact Eddie Thomas.
Youth Summer Events
Eddie Thomas has several different activities planned for the youth during the summer. Be on the lookout for more information about a Youth Hiking Trip on June 29, a Youth Movie Night on July 19, and a Back to School Bash on August 2.
notes from the music department
The Shady Grove Chancel Choir is preparing two Christmas musicals. The first one will be sung with the Dandridge Community Choir in June 13th at FBC in Sevierville at 6:00. This will be the premiere of Mary McDonald’s newest work which has just been published. In fact, the composer has not heard it sung live yet! The second is the musical that they will be singing this November at Carnegie Hall. They are so excited about this trip and want to thank everyone for their support at the auction.
Guy Penrod 2020
Shady Grove is currently in negotiations to bring Guy Penrod back for another concert in September of 2020 and would like your feedback. If you would be interested in attending this concert in 2020, please contact Linda Matthews.
This fall, Linda will be starting a “Tween Choir” for middle schoolers. They will rehearse on Wednesday evenings at 5:00 right before youth group and will lead in worship in the fall and throughout the year. Contact Linda Matthews for more details.
adult bible study
The Adult Bible Study led by Jason McIntosh will meet three times this summer:
June 5- Fellowship Hall 6-7:30
July 3- Penny and Steve Douglas' house 6-7:30
July 24- Jim and Linda Noone's house 6-7:30
All are welcome to attend any or all of the meetings.
Join us as we celebrate the home we have in Shady Grove on Sunday, June 2. We will worship together at one combined service at 10:00 with a potluck meal to follow in the fellowship hall. We will also be recognizing new members who have joined in the last year. Bring a covered dish or dessert and celebrate coming home with your Shady Grove family!
VBS Decoration-making party
Kids, youth, and adults are all invited to come together to make VBS an event to remember! On Saturday, June 15 from 9-12 Shady Grove will be hosting a decoration-making party in the fellowship hall to create decorations for our African safari themed VBS. Many hands make light work, so come out for a time of fellowship and crafting together.
