Are you ready for a new school year? Here at Shady Grove, we are sad to see summer come to an end, but we are ready to get back into the swing of things! Look below to check out our fall activities, but first let's review what happened in July!
During VBS, our children, youth, and adults collected 2,020 boxes of food for the Jubilee Project! Our staff, along with Helen McClaren, visited Jubilee in early July to deliver the food and were blessed by the gratitude and kindness of the Jubilee staff. Thank you, church, for supporting this wonderful ministry!
Camp Wesley Woods
We sent five children to Camp Wesley Woods this year, and they had a great time learning about how God's love is out of this world! Jason joined them during the week as a Minister in Residence, and Eddie came up for a day to visit.
Hamburger, Hot Dot, and Ice Cream Social
Our United Methodist Men held their summer fundraiser on July 13th, serving hot dogs and hamburgers to about 60 guests. Members of the church brought homemade ice cream to round out the hot summer Saturday.
Youth Movie Night
Our youth got together for a night of Hakuna Matata at the showing of the live-action Lion King.
Our Children's Ministry is growing! As such, we have several exciting announcements.
Starting August 11, Shady Grove will be offering Children's Church for children ages 3-2nd grade during the 11:15 service. Families will worship together during the first half of the service and go with Mrs. Ashley to King Street prior to the sermon. There they will engage in a lesson that parallels Jason's sermon, along with crafts and activities. Parents will pick up their children in King Street after the service. Ashley is asking that every parent who has a child attending Children's Church volunteer to be on a rotation as an assistant to teachers Ashley Wren and Tonya Moyers. We are so excited to begin this new step with the hopes of reaching out to young families within our church and our community!
This Sunday, August 4, is our Promotion Sunday here at Shady Grove, and we will be unveiling a new children's Sunday school class that morning! We will now have a class for children PreK-1st grade and children 2nd-5th grade. Our PreK-1st group will meet in our current Sunday school room in the hallway across from the downstairs bathrooms, and our 2nd-5th grade will meet in Ashley's old office. We are thrilled that the growth in the Children's Ministry has led to new classes that will engage children at each age level.
Wednesday Night Kickoff
Our first Wednesday Night of the new school year will be August 7 from 6-7:30. Children K-5th will meet in King Street and will dismiss from the large Sunday school room downstairs. Nursery will be offered for children birth-4 years old. We can't wait to start a new year!

We are always looking for volunteers to help support the youth ministry on Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings. Eddie Thomas is looking for volunteers to teach and assist in the small group on both days. This is a great opportunity to invest in the lives of the young people in our church. If you are interested in helping with a small group, please contact Eddie Thomas.
We are looking for the following volunteers
o Sunday Small Group Leader – This person would be willing to teach our High School Small Group.
o Wednesday Night High School Boys Small Group Assistants – This person would assist with our High School Leader in small group breakouts.
Notes from the music department
Chancel Choir- Carnegie Hall and Christmas Concert
Our wonderful Chancel Choir has worked hard all summer learning music for worship, and also for our trip to New York. We have been invited to sing in Carnegie Hall in November. Most of the choir will be going along with some members of our church and relatives of the singers. We hope you will come to our Christmas Concert on December 15th at 4:00 to hear this glorious music written by Mary McDonald. Mary’s daughter, Beth Smith, will be here to play for us again this year.
We are beginning a new “Tween Choir” for those kids who have moved up into youth group and still want to sing. This rehearsal will be held on Wednesdays at 5:00. We’ll be singing in worship in the fall.
King's Kidz Children's Choir
The King’s Kidz will begin this Sunday, the 4th at 10:00 right after the Traditional service. We will be in the choir room for about 20 minutes. You will hear them in worship soon, too. If you attend the 9:00 service and your child should be in this choir, please stay and let them sing----or pick a Sunday school class to be a part of. You will be blessed!
Food For Kids at Piedmont School
We collected Food for Kids at Piedmont School in July. Our youth are packing 500 bags at their Back to School Bash/Lock-In on Aug. 2nd. These will be delivered to the school to be given to food-deprived children on Fridays so they have food to eat over the weekend. Last year, we packed 1260 bags of food for 42 children each week of the school year.
We wish to thank each person who generously donated food items or money to make this local mission a success. Remember Jesus said, "I was hungry and you fed me...whatever you did for the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me." God bless each of you.
Access Life Expo
Access-Life Expo is celebrating its 10th anniversary on Saturday, Aug 17th, at Cherokee Dam in Jefferson City. This is a FREE event for individuals and families living with disabilities to enjoy God's great outdoors. Event is from 10am-2pm, but as volunteers, we are asked to arrive by 8:30am.
Shady Grove has provided the food every year. We still need volunteers to help cook hotdogs and serve. There are also other areas you can volunteer: being a buddy to a disabled person, crafts, games, and kayaking, or come out on Fri. the 16th and help with set-up. It's not too late to sign-up and you will be blessed! There is a sign-up sheet in the Narthex. You can also register online at www.access-life.org or by calling 1-352-455-9926.
We also collect gently used disability equipment and supplies to be given out at the Belize Access-Life Expo in January. These can be brought to the event or our church. For further information about the Expo or Collections, you may call Helen McClaren at 731-694-7271.

Sunday, August 4 our children will officially be promoted to their new grades for the upcoming school year. Our upcoming sixth grade students will be honored in both services and will begin attending youth, and our four-year-olds will move up to the PreK-1st Sunday school class.
