Fall is finally here! It is still 90 degrees, but there is a cool-down coming, along with some exciting events at Shady Grove! Before we look at what's coming, let's look at where we have been. updatesYouth Bonfire Last month, our youth came together for a bonfire where they hung out, played tag, ate, and gathered around the fire to roast marshmallows. Rummage Sale On September 13 and 14, our church hosted a community wide rummage sale with items donated by church members. Nearly $6,000 was raised from this event to go towards children and youth projects. We would like to thank everyone who came out to help, with a special shout-out to Charlotte Griggs who organized the event. Thank you, church, for your help in making the rummage sale a success! Family Magic Night On September 28, local magician Jason Mardis put on a magic show for families in our church and community. He did a wonderful job using illustrations and object lessons to present the gospel. Thank you, Jason, and all who helped pull off this fun event! what's newkidz corner Children's Christmas Play On December 18, the church will come together for a Christmas Carol Sing-A-Long. In between songs, our children will be portraying scenes from Jesus' birth narrative. We will be practicing these scenes on Wednesday nights during the fall, so if your child would like to be a part, make sure they attend Wednesday night activities from 5:45-7:30. Volunteers Needed Ashley Wren is looking for volunteers to help within the Children's Ministry on Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights. If you are interested in being a part of teaching kids about Jesus or have any questions, please contact her at children@shadygrovedandridge.org or call the church office. Sign Language Performance The kids participating in Wednesday night programming will be performing the sign language they have learned to the worship song "What a Beautiful Name" on October 27th during both services. Check with Mrs. Ashley for more details. October Birthdays Mrs. Ashley and Co. would like to wish a very happy birthday to Izzy Covington, Lexi Wells, Emerald Resurreccion, and Mia and Carson Cabatuando in the month of October! ignite youth September Recap During the month of September, our youth helped with the annual SGUMC rummage sale. They helped sort, price, and sell items as well as load them for our customers. Our youth continues to work hand in hand with our church to help continue ministry at Shady Grove. October Mission Projects On Sunday, October 27 Ignite Youth will help support Fall-A-Palooza from 3pm-5pm. Our youth will be leading games. If you are able to help, make sure you sign up with Eddie Thomas. October Sunday Mornings During the next several months our youth will be diving deep into the book of Matthew. Sunday mornings are really exciting in our small groups as we are averaging between 20-25 youth and are becoming comfortable sharing with one another. We would love for you to join our Small Groups on Sunday mornings at 10am. October Wednesday Nights During the month of October we will be doing things a little differently. We hope to see everyone on Wednesdays at 5:45pm. If you curious as to what we are doing, come and see… Youth Council Meeting Join us Thursday, October 3rd at 6:30pm to learn what’s happening with youth. Volunteers are requested to be there and any youth who would like to participate are encouraged to attend. Volunteer Recognition This month we would like to recognize Craig Knierim, leader of our high school boys. He has been with Ignite Youth for 2 years. Craig is an integral part of the success in our youth program at SGUMC. He connects with our guys on a personal level that allows them to have fun while seeking to strengthen their faith. We would like to thank Mr. Craig for all he does for the Ignite Youth program. Youth Recognition This month we would like to recognize two young ladies, Olivia Steinberg and Gracie Williamson. These two have joined the tween choir and are using their gifts and talents to share with our church. On September 29, they performed a song in both of our worship services. We can’t wait to see what they will do next. notes from the music department Tween Choir Our new Tween Choir, consisting of Olivia Steinberg and Gracie Williamson, sang this past Sunday in both services and garnered two standing ovations! The girls did such a great job leading in worship and singing for the Lord. You will hear then again soon and, of course, at Christmas. King's Kidz Children's Choir Our children’s choir will be singing on October 20. They will sing “Another Sunday School Spectacular,” which is ten minutes long! Come and sing along to all your favorite VBS songs from when you were a kid. They will even sing The Ten Commandments, and you’ll be able to sing and follow along with the vibrant DVD track. Chancel Choir Our wonderful Chancel Choir is still hard at work on two Christmas musicals. The first, “Sing Christmas” by Mary McDonald and Joel Raney, is the one that will be sung at Carnegie Hall in November. We will perform this musical in a concert here at Shady Grove on December 15th at 4:00. The second, “Love Made a Way” by Mary McDonald and Jay Rouse, will be sung by the Dandridge Community Choir at First Baptist Church on December 8th. This performance will include a full orchestra in which our very own Todd DeMaria will be playing trumpet. new member spotlightDuring the month of September, we had five people join our church family: John and LIsa Breen, Tom and Tammy Clyde, and Linda Ogle. Ballinger Farm Our annual pumpkin patch church outing is just around the corner! Come join the fun as we pick pumpkins, play games, eat, and fellowship with one another at Ballinger Farm, 2805 Renfro Rd, Jefferson City. We ask our families to bring a two liter drink and chips or cookies. Cost is $3.00, which can be given to Ashley Wren or Eddie Thomas. Please sign up in advance so we can prepare accordingly. Charge Conference Our annual charge conference will be held Sunday, October 13th at 5:00 at First United Methodist in Dandridge. All are invited to attend. Fall-A-Palooza Join us for our annual Fall-A-Palooza on October 27 for games, bouncy houses, food, trunk-or-treat, and more! This free event is open to the entire community. Church members: Beginning next Sunday, we will begin collecting candy and bottled water to hand out at Fall-A-Palooza. We are asking specifically for candy that will not melt. Check below for a review of the end of summer and a preview of fall here at Shady Grove! updatesKids Back to School Bash On August 1 we celebrated the return to school with a pool party at the Jefferson City Outdoor Pool! Nearly 100 people were in attendance for pizza, swimming, and fellowship. It was a splash! Youth Back to School Bash and Lock-In On August 2 and 3, Ignite Youth kicked off the new school year. Our youth gathered at the house of Mr. Gerald Suttles for an evening of fun and fellowship. They also spent time together in a lock-in where they were able to bond and get to know each other. Promotion Sunday This year, 9 fifth graders promoted from the King's Kidz Children's Ministry to Ignite Youth Ministry! We are so proud of these kids and continue to pray for and support them as they enter this new chapter of life. Sunshine Ambassadors On August 11 the Sunshine Ambassadors gave us a wonderful performance during the second service. They are always a joy to watch! Access Life Bag Packing On August 14 the youth and adults of the church came together to pack bags for the Access Life event that was held the following weekend. A big thanks to all who came out to help! Access Life The Access Life Expo hosted near 1000 people on August 17, with our church showing up in many ways to serve those with special needs. Thank you to everyone who gave up their Saturday to help! What's newkidz corner Children's Church We now offer Children's Church for children ages 3 1/2-2nd grade during the 11:15 service. Families will worship together during the first half of the service and go with Mrs. Tonya to King Street prior to the sermon. There they will engage in a lesson that parallels Jason's sermon, along with crafts and activities. Parents will pick up their children in King Street after the service. Ashley is asking that every parent who has a child attending Children's Church volunteer to be on a rotation as an assistant to teacher Tonya Moyers. Nursery Volunteers Ashley is looking for volunteers to help in the nursery either once every two months from 9-12:15 on Sunday morning, once every two months from 11-12:15 on Sunday morning, or once every 4-6 weeks on Wednesday nights from 5:30-7:30. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact her at children@shadygrovedandridge.org. Children's Choir Don't forget that we have a children's choir for PreK-5th! They meet in the choir room on Sunday mornings from 10-10:15. For more information, see Linda Matthews. Wednesday Night Meals We now offer full meals for children and youth on Wednesday nights. Children will meet in the fellowship hall between 5:30 and 5:45 and the meal will begin at 5:45. We will then continue with normal Wednesday night activities. ignite youth August Recap On Wednesday nights our youth have started a series called lifelines where they have been learning about friendships. Exciting things are happening in our Small Group hour on Sunday mornings, we started a new small group specifically for 6th and 7th graders. Ignite Youth has partnered with our music department to start a Tween Choir lead by Linda Matthews. We are hoping more tweens will get involved. The youth council met on August 8th and reviewed upcoming events and tentative budget for FY20. Eddie Thomas met with Caring Team to discuss possible upcoming opportunities for collaboration with our Ignite youth. Ignite youth has started off the new school year with a bang. September Mission Projects On Saturday, September 14, Ignite Youth will help support our church’s Rummage Sale from 8am-2pm. Our youth will volunteer their time to help raise money to support Children and Youth Initiatives. September Events On September 6th, Ignite Youth will host a Bon Fire from 7pm-10pm. The youth will be meet at the church then drive to the location. Join us around the fire for a time of fellowship and fun. We will roast hotdogs and marshmallows. September Wednesday Nights During the month of September we will be doing a series called Stronger. The big idea is Jesus can redeem what’s gone wrong. We hope to see everyone on Wednesdays at 6pm. Kim leads our High School Girls Small group. She has been with Ignite youth for 3 years. She is an integral part of the success in our youth program at SGUMC. Kim’s passion allows us the opportunity to reach our youth right where they are. Kim makes each youth feel special and accepted. We would like to thank Mrs. Kim for all she does for the Ignite Youth program. Youth Recognition This month we would like to recognize our 6th graders. We have 9 six graders that joined our Ignite youth this year: Logan Benson, Keira DeMaria, Emerson Ellison, Theron Frye, Gage Manuel, Olivia Steinberg, Elizabeth Tiller, Tucker Williams, & Gracie Williamson. We are excited for them to join our group and can’t wait to see what’s next for this group and what the Lord has in store for them. notes from the music department Chancel Choir December Performances Our wonderful Chancel Choir is still hard at work on their music for Carnegie Hall.
